Vineyard Notes

The Ghost Block Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from our oldest block in the MorgaenLee Vineyard, located in Yountville, Napa Valley. This property encompasses 30.25 acres, primarily planted with certified-organic, family-owned Sauvignon Blanc. The vines, planted in 1978, are Clone 1 grafted to St. George rootstock, and this block is dry-farmed. During harvest, we divide the block into three separate picks, each targeting different stages of maturity. This approach allows us to blend three distinct wines from the same block, each with unique flavor profiles, resulting in a breathtaking Sauvignon Blanc. This meticulous approach allows us to blend three different wines from the same block, each with its own unique flavor profile, resulting in a truly exceptional Sauvignon Blanc. The moderate temperatures of 2023 further contributed to the wine’s vibrant acidity and complex flavor development

About Ghostblock Winery

In 1877 the Oakville Winery became the 9th bonded winery in California, and today, this same winery is the home of our Napa Wine Company, where our family makes all of our organically-grown wines. We are proud to be the only single-digit bonded winery still in existence in California, and our Oakville Winery wines pay homage to this history and heritage. Under the direction of Winemaker Lynn Watanabe, the impeccably-made Oakville Winery Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are sourced primarily from our Pelissa Vineyard directly behind our winery in the heart of the acclaimed Oakville AVA.

Family | Winemakers

As a fifth-generation family-run company, we do this by producing prized Oakville and Yountville appellation estate wines across three distinct brands: Elizabeth Rose, Oakville Winery and Ghost Block. This expansive portfolio provides a variety of different and delicious single varietal and blended wines. As dedicated growers and land stewards, all 650 acres of our grapes are 100% certified organically farmed. Put simply, it is our mandate to offer world-class wines at competitive prices. While the Napa Valley bubble may eventually burst, Ghost Block Estate Wines is determined to continue by offering transparency and consistency. After all, it’s in our roots.

The Pelissa family legacy is unique to Napa Valley and rare in the modern day California wine industry. It began in 1902 when Joseph Pelissa came to Napa Valley from Liguria, Italy and purchased his first 35 acres of land with a single gold coin in 1903. His son Andrew later took over, building successful dairy and trucking businesses and eventually acquiring 1000 acres in Oakville and Yountville where he planted wine grapes and other crops. A civic-minded man who was an early champion of keeping Napa Valley in agriculture, Andrew was instrumental in establishing Napa Valley’s Agricultural Preserve Zone. Today, the Pelissa grape-growing operation continues to be family-owned and run, overseen by and 5 generation family members who live on and farm the land. Since planting their first grapes, the family has supplied fruit to some of the most prestigious wineries in Napa Valley, and its entire 635 acres of grapes have been 100% certified organic since 1991In 2006, over 100 years after Joseph Pelissa came to Napa Valley, the Pelissa family decided to create their own wines from the grapes they grow. Ghost Block Estate Wines, comprised of three separate brands, are meant to showcase this unpretentious family’s pride in where they live, the vineyards they farm, and their family’s deep roots in Napa Valley history. In the end, this is a real story about a real family who, for five generations has woken up every day to the vista of their own vineyards. Nothing gives the family members more pride than farming their own land organically and creating the finest wines possible. It is no coincidence that their land is in the heart of Napa Valley. Their greatest hope is that a little bit of their history and true passion for farming is expressed in each and every bottle.
