Winemaker Notes

A soft golden color, this wine features bright scents of lemon crumb bars and honeydew, with a hint of apricot, toasted oak, and the evocative trace of a freshly struck match. Entry on the palate is round and robust, lending a richness to the fruit. At the same time, a zing of acidity hints the sides of the tongue, maintaining the liveliness of citrus and melon. This dance of vibrancy and intensity carries over to the finish, as honeydew and apricot trail off in silky smoothness.

About the Wagner Family

The Wagners come from a long line of grape growers and winemakers, with a history in Napa Valley dating back to the 1850s. Through the years, they have embraced a hands-on work ethic and are constantly looking for ways to keep improving the quality of their wines.

Whether it’s venturing to different regions to find diverse sources of top-quality grapes or experimenting with new farming techniques, the result is a pairing of tradition with innovation, a respect for the old with the promise of the new.

It’s been over 45 years since Chuck Wagner, along with his parents, Charlie and Lorna Wagner, founded Caymus Vineyards in Rutherford, Napa Valley. Chuck Wagner continues to make two world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignons under the Caymus label from Napa Valley.

Chuck’s older son, Charlie, produces coastal Mer Soleil Chardonnay and a recently released Pinot noir. In addition, he is Director of Winemaking for Conundrum, which now includes Conundrum White, Red, Sparkling and Rosé. Charlie’s latest endeavor is Red Schooner, a rich, dark Malbec made from grapes grown in the Andes Mountains, shipped chilled to Napa Valley and produced in the supple Caymus style.

Older daughter Jenny is winemaker for Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot from Napa Valley. Both wines offer a fresh take on these varietals, with a style not typically expected from their production in California.

Never ones to rest on their laurels (or sit still for long), the Wagners feel extremely fortunate to be spending their days in pursuit of making extraordinary wine, year after year and generation after generation.

About Mer Soleil

Mer Soleil began thirty years ago with a drive from Napa Valley down the California coast in search of the best land to plant Chardonnay.

We put down roots in the Santa Lucia Highlands, nestled within the broader reach of Monterey County, drawn in by its down-to-earth vibe, rich farming history and weather that could not be more ideal for growing Chardonnay. Started by Chuck Wagner — known for founding Caymus Vineyards with his parents in 1972 — Mer Soleil is now led by Chuck’s son, winemaker Charlie Wagner. Inheriting his family’s love of farming and adventurous spirit, he first spent time at the Mer Soleil vineyard in middle school as “punishment” when he got in trouble for bringing firecrackers to school. Like other members of his family, Charlie feels most at home in the vineyard. He has led Mer Soleil’s evolution, creating both SILVER unoaked Chardonnay and  more recently, sourcing grapes from other parts of Monterey County in addition to the Santa Lucia Highlands. Charlie is always eager to escort people in his truck down the area’s rustic roads, so that they too can experience a place unlike any other.

It started as an experiment. Today, the scent of lemon blossoms can be picked up in our Chardonnay.

Inspired by the diversity of farming in the Salinas Valley (which includes the area where Mer Soleil is based), we embraced the chance to try our hand at growing another crop. The Lisbon and Meyer lemons we planted on our Mer Soleil property have thrived in the area’s frost-free climate. Over time, an unexpected benefit emerged — hints of delicate lemon blossoms began gracing our Chardonnay, their scent and flavor carrying over from the nearby orchard. As farmers, we love how our work in the vineyard constantly evolves, and we’re always looking for new ideas to try.
