2022 Villa Sparina Gavi
Tasting Notes
Sliced apples, lemons, white peaches, elderflowers and crushed stones on the nose with subtle white-pepper spice. It’s mineral and fresh, with a medium body and a crisp finish.
About Villa Sparina
Situated in the heart of Gavi DOC, specifically in Monterotondo, Villa Sparina was established by Mario Moccagatta. Presently, the winery is under the joint management of Mario and his two sons, Stefano and Massimo. Renowned winemaker Beppe Caviola, a leading figure in Piemonte, serves as the head enologist, propelling Gavi to unprecedented heights by fully exploring the potential of the Cortese grape. All wines produced by Villa Sparina are crafted from fruits cultivated on their own estate and are bottled on-site. The vineyards are overseen by agronomist Federico Curtaz and he intentionally postpones the harvest until the final possible moment, resulting in wines with remarkable concentration, striking equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness.
Gavi DOCG is a white wine crafted in the Alto Monferrato region, situated in the southern segment of the Alessandria province within Piedmont, in the northeastern part of Italy. The wine is exclusively derived from Cortese grapes cultivated in the town of Gavi and its neighboring villages, from which it draws its name.
Gavi wines typically exhibit a pale straw hue with subtle green tinges. They boast a delicate and fruity bouquet with hints of apple. These wines are known for their dry, refreshing, full-bodied, and elegant characteristics. Over recent years, vintners have embraced the creation of more intricate and multifaceted wines, yielding impressive outcomes. This trend underscores that the Cortese grapes cultivated in the Gavi area possess the potential for aging gracefully within bottles or barrels, resulting in wines with enduring qualities.
