Winemaker Notes

The honey and white acacia blossom in this Vouvray’s perfume is a rare treat. The wine has youthful deliciousness and great aging potential.

About Domaine Champalou

A family estate and a collegial organization. On the farm, everyone has their own workstation but one eye on everything.

Since 1984, many bottles have been appreciated …

Currently, 25 hectares are cultivated according to sustainable viticulture. The production is distributed in around twenty countries around the world.

Birth of a domain

Both children winemakers – Catherine is part of the 12 th generation of winemakers on Vouvray and Didier of the 6 th in the Poitou! – Catherine and Didier Champalou from the start wanted to lead their estate in a direction that was not at all that of the appellation at the time: to allow the singularity of each terroir to be expressed thanks to a cuvée that is dedicated. And this mainly in natural wine (80%) while sparkling wines were (and still are) the main production (75%) of the AOC.

Moreover, at a time when production had other outlets than at present, the Champalou made the decision to bottle all of their production and sell it directly.

In a few years, they go from a few hectares to around twenty. Catherine and Didier, well before the ecological movement, put the work of the vineyard in their priority and always put forward a peasant viticulture, respectful of the environment and sustainable as the basis of a good wine.

Ideal complement to the diploma: a world tour of the vine and wine!

In 2003, with a diploma in Viticulture and Oenology in hand, Céline went to work in the spirit of the companionship of craftsmen, in order to discover all the possibilities available to her. These years of roaming take her to New Zealand, South Africa, Canada (from the sugar shacks of Quebec to the Okanagan Valley vineyards of British Columbia, passing through Ontario and Alberta!) , in Médoc, Corsica and Languedoc-Roussillon where she works in very small structures (winegrowers who do not even know Chenin!), but also in very large groups.

It is on the strength of these varied and enriching experiences and this knowledge of the “different worlds of wine” that she chooses her future: to be an INDEPENDENT winegrower of Chenin! So here she is back in Vouvray for the 2006 harvest…

2006: 13 th generation in action!

Catherine, Didier and Céline work with a common dynamic: to perpetuate the peasant tradition of the profession of winegrower while relying on technical advances that allow better respect for nature, vines, wine and man, while giving pleasure for people who open their bottles!
