Winemaker Notes

This vintage displays a dark, brooding nose with damp forest and meaty notes lifted by crunchy red and black fruits, plus, a charming savory spice overlay. This wine is vibrant and alight with a youthful energy.

About Ernie Els Wines

As a leading South African ambassador, Ernie Els has demonstrated a passion for excellence and these same qualities are evident in Ernie Els Wines. Els selected Stellenbosch to be the home of his vineyards and appointed the award-winning Louis Strydom as winemaker. His aim was to produce premium wines, with a particular focus on red wines.

The north-facing vineyards on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain made for ideal growing conditions, especially for red varietals, and so, in 2000, the first grapes were crushed for the inaugural vintage of Ernie Els Signature – a Bordeaux-style blend.

The winery was officially opened in 2004, and since then, the focus has been on producing a range of wines, with a particular focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and other red wines.

The Ernie Els vineyards are located on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. As an appellation, Stellenbosch is known for its extreme diversity of soil. Our main soil material is granite, with additional layers Oakleaf soil and, to a lesser degree, Hutton soil. These soils are quite vigorous and our viticulturist manages this effectively by adapting his spacing when planting the vines. Further beneath the surface, the terroir also includes some clay, which assists in retaining some water in the warmer seasons.
