Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-red color. On the nose a beautiful bouquet of fruit, cedar, plums and licorice is perceived. A fruity Tempranillo, broad and solid on the palate, where the wood is perceptible but not at all dominant. Very discreet acidity.

About Teofilo Reyes

Téofilo Reyes is a living legend within the Ribera del Duero appellation, he is the person who has largely given the appellation its reputation and current character. Because before him, with the exception of Vega Sicilia, “claret” wines were made in the area, a long way from the wines for which the region is known today.

Teófilo was born in La Horra in 1922. A chemist by training, in 1948 he took charge of courses at the oenological school in Haro, Rioja. Until his retirement in 1986, he taught chemistry and physics, training and influencing different generations of winemakers and scientists. He participated in the founding of various cooperatives in which he taught winemaking techniques. In 1954 he took charge of the technical management of the “Ribera Duero” winery, in Peñafiel (known for its “Protos” wine). At that time there was not yet a DORibera del Duero. He remains in Protos until 1972, but two years later he meets Alejandro Fernández, in Pesquera de Duero. Teófilo created Pesquera and made this wine a benchmark for years in the region. But in 1992, after almost 20 years dedicated body and soul to this project, the abrupt end of this relationship is reached. At 70 years old, he still felt young to be doing nothing, and together with the help of his two sons, Juanjo and Luis, they created their own winery in Peñafiel, the “Bodegas Reyes”. Bodegas Reyes was founded in 1994 with the hope of continuing the experience accumulated by Teófilo for more than 50 years.

With its first vintage, “Teófilo Reyes Crianza 1994”, the winery placed a Spanish wine among the top 10 in the world for the first time in the tastings of the specialized magazine Wine Spectator. Since then his fame has only grown. Its style is classic, with a velvety finish.
