Winemaker Notes

Sequoia Grove Napa Valley Chardonnay is meticulously hand harvested and, upon arrival at the winery, immediately whole cluster pressed to tank where it is cold settled and racked 24 hours later to another tank to begin fermentation. As the fermentation progresses, the tank is barreled down in stages. The first stage gets the most barrel extraction. The second stage is a combination of barrel extraction and fruit flavors. The third stage, at lower brix, preserves the fresh fruit characteristics. The wine finishes primary fermentation in 100% French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 10 months on the lees where it undergoes battonage (lees stirring) every two weeks, as each lot demands.

About Sequoia Grove Winery

At Sequoia Grove, we believe that winemaking is storytelling. Our goal is to craft wines that tell the story of the vineyard, the varietal, and the vintage. We believe winemaking starts in the vineyard, and each year we invest in our vineyards so the wines we make will express the terroir of each site year after year. We always strive to learn and grow in our pursuit to bring you the best that Napa Valley has to offer. From the vineyards to our state-of-the-art production facility, Sequoia Grove has made a continuous investment in new and better ways to craft our wines. We use the best grapes grown in the best terroir to produce our balanced and food-friendly wines for quality you can taste.

Our present-day winery and its 24-acre estate vineyard were part of the original Rancho Caymus land grant given in 1836 to George Yount, the area’s first European-American pioneer. Over the years the property changed hands until it was purchased in 1978 by James and Barbara Allen. The following year, the duo opened a winery in a 100-year-old barn beneath a grove of Sequoia trees, and so Sequoia Grove was born. Our 24-acre Sequoia Grove Estate Vineyard and 50-acre Tonella Estate Vineyard are both located in Rutherford, where the superb climate and gravelly-loam soils impart distinct flavor in the Bordeaux varieties. Sequoia Grove Winery is proud to be a Certified Napa Green Winery. Guided by a vision to respect our heritage and farm for the future, we observe sustainable farming practices, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and gentle winemaking in the cellar.

About Our Wines

We own nearly 100 acres of vineyards and work with nine different grape varieties in total. You will find most of these in The Winemaker Series – a single variety range which aims for a high degree of varietal correctness. This array of elegant white, rosé, and red wines ensures you’ll find something you love to help bring out the best in wine and food pairing.

Rutherford’s hot days and cool nights are particularly ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This is why Cabernet Sauvignon is our champion variety and we are highly regarded for our world-class Reserve and single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

For those seeking to discover the rich, ruby-red world of the king of the grapes, we invite you to try The Vineyard Series – wines made to showcase site-specific soil, climate, and altitude variations from different vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon in this series has included wines from Tonella, Stagecoach, Morisoli, Henry Brothers, Christian and Lamoreaux Vineyards.

The apex of our Cabernet Sauvignon craft is the Cambium, our flagship Cabernet-based red blend. Each year, the Cambium blend is crafted from the finest lots in the cellar, representing the best of our winemaking endeavors.
